Was Elvis Presley worried as he waited backstage before a 1956 concert in Jacksonville, Fla.? During a performance the summer before, frenzied fans in the Florida city had torn his clothes off, and many in Jacksonville railed at his return. City officials were ready with a warrant to arrest the hip-swiveling singer for impairing the morals of minors. At local churches, preachers denounced him in sermons and congregants prayed for his salvation. But the 21-year-old King toned down his act, and the show went off without incident.

A stunning portrait of the city we love: New York.
New York City’s history is a seemingly endless story, from the wide-eyed immigrants of Ellis Island to today’s caffeinated commuters buzzing through subway stations. The new book New York: Portrait of a City gives the city an impeccable tribute, devoting 600 pages to documenting the Big Apple through the eyes of 150 world-class photographers, including Esther Bubley, Paul Himmel, LIFE’s Alfred Eisenstaedt, among others.
Here, images from the book that capture New York and a handful of its 8 million stories.

Get this for my birthday Blaine!

Gladly babe. But promise to act surprised!

Ever wonder what the favorite photographs are of the LIFE editors? Here you go.

Meryl Streep Photographed for the January Issue of Vogue by Annie Leibovitz

Such a remarkable woman.

Meryl Streep Marathon, my house, tomorrow. Bring low-fat snacks and I’ll supply the drinks! :)

I’m there. ♥

Can I come?

No.

What I think Kurt means, Rachel, is that this is our first Christmas together as a couple so we want to spend as much time together as possible. Alone. No offence, but you’re just not part of our … couple-hood. But we could hang out next week?
